Dowding & Mills secures turnkey project at Shotts Prison

Dowding & Mills has recently completed a turnkey security systems project for the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) at Shotts Prison.

The job involved replacing two old and unreliable inner compound gates at the long-term prison in Lanarkshire. The gates provide the only access in and out of the prison and therefore it was essential that the work was carried out quickly and with the minimum disruption.

The security systems team from Dowding & Mills carried out a site survey prior to designing and manufacturing two bespoke gates and the associated running gear. The gates were installed over two consecutive weekends, which required a great deal of forward planning and flexibility in order to minimise any inconvenience.

Steven Starritt, maintenance manager at Shotts Prison, commented: “This is the first time that we have worked with Dowding & Mills and were pleased with their ability to work to our tight time-scales and their flexible approach, particularly the way they worked around the requirements of our staff. An attraction of using Dowding & Mills was the support of the local branch in Falkirk, which should ensure we receive a comprehensive and speedy response in meeting the requirements of the contract.”

Stefan Haynes, product manager for security systems at Dowding & Mills added:
“This is the first turnkey job that we have carried out, and the first with the Scottish Prison Service. We hope that the quality and reliability of the gates will put us in the running for any similar projects in the future, infact we have already received enquiries from three other Scottish Prisons.”

In addition to carrying out the design, manufacture and installation work, Dowding & Mills will also be responsible for the maintenance of the gates over the next two years.
