System engineering involves the design and manufacture of the following elements:

Control panels, consoles, instrument test panels, pneumatic test panels, control desks, instrument and mimic panels, motor control centres for AC and DC machines, control systems and guarding for process machinery and packaged process analyser systems for the oil, gas and chemical process industries, assembly and test machines and special purpose machines.

The application of programmable logic controllers, SCADA systems to process and machinery control applications are also a part of system design together with the maintenance and service of electrical or instrument plant.

System design involves an element of overhaul and refurbishment of industrial machines, including machines with CNC capability and their associated control systems incorporating risk assessment and machine safety. Dowding & Mills also specialise in the overhaul and refurbishment of control cubicles, control gear, instrument housings, industrial robots and their associated systems.

The design and manufacture of pneumatically and electrically operated pick and place units, motion control systems for retrofitting to existing machines and the design and writing of control programmes including HMI graphics, item labelling, bar code reading and data acquisition are further elements of Dowding & Mills system engineering.

The key sectors of systems engineering are, project management, engineering and design, software, manufacturing, refurbishment and installation and commissioning.

Project management, engineering and design

Dowding & Mills provide a total in-house design facility to all industries for the management and control of their production processes. Design is completed to National and International standards and codes to satisfy individual specifications and requirements.

All design work is prepared, reviewed and verified in compliance with BS EN ISO 9001. Dowding & Mills use the latest version of AutoCAD with laser and inkjet printer equipment to ensure the best quality output. A consultation service is available to customers who require assistance with project definition including site survey to plan and quantification of the work scope.

Project management activities include planning, control of in-house works, end user liaison, resource allocation, control of sub0contracted works, procurement facilities, provision of labour, site supervision and commissioning co-ordination. Larger multi-disciplined projects can be undertaken utilising site services and mechanical companies within the Dowding & Mills group.

Software

Dowding & Mills' in-house capabilities include software preparation, verification and testing for most PLC systems including Siemens, Rockwell Automation, Mitsubishi, Group Schneider (Modicon) GE Fanuc and Toshiba. Graphical operator interfaces (HMI's) and data acquisition systems can also be configured, as can many SCADA packages.

All programmable hardware can be fully integrated into complete control systems for most industrial processes and machines. Applications can be provided for chemical, pharmaceutical, brewing, water, automotive, paper, oil and gas industries.

Software projects range from small stand-alone PLC's to large networked and Industrial Bus systems. Motion control packages such s Baldor (Optimised Control) and Triomotion can also be provided. Applications can include anything from existing machine retrofits to complete new process control solutions.

Manufacturing

Dowding & Mills offers a comprehensive manufacturing service for all instrument/electrical systems including control panels, mimics, test panels, motor control centres, switchgear, pneumatic control, hazardous area equipment, PLC and SCADA based control systems.

Integrated solutions, including pneumatics, switchgear and skid mounted equipment can be provided and extensive workshop facilities allow the manufacture of large combined MCC/control/PLC/telemetry panels.

Manufacturing projects, including PLC control, mechanical assemblies, motion control and electrical installation can be undertaken as Dowding & Mills provides a one-stop solution for the most complex applications.

Vibration/temperature monitoring, IS equipment, nucleonic level equipment and analyser units can all be incorporated into stand alone panels or 'Pre-assembled units' skid mounted, interconnected and functionally tested to minimise installation and commissioning activities on site.

Refurbishment

Dowding & Mills offer a range of refurbishment capabilities from small starter cubicles to complete electro-mechanical reclamation of industrial machines including presses, borers, lathes and milling machines. This can be fully integrated with new pneumatic and electrical control systems providing a cost effective complete solution.

Hydraulic and electrical refurbishment work together with high quality re-painting resulting in equipment being returned to near original specification with controls and safety circuits to the latest standards.

Installation and Commissioning

Dowding & Mills offer a full installation and commissioning service for all systems including instrument and electrical disciplines together with mechanical services. Installation and commissioning work can be undertaken onshore and offshore throughout the UK and world-wide.

Pipework can be installed using compression fittings or Dowding & Mills' fully automated tube welding system. Hazardous area equipment can be supplied, installed and tested to the latest CENELEC and ATEX directives.

Dowding & Mills has the registered approval and Quality Assurance Management Standards of NQA (National Accreditation of Certification Bodies BS EN ISO 9001:1994), MOD (Ministry of Defence) approval, First Point Assessment and enrolment as an approved contractor with the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting.
