 CONDITION MONITORING

The concept of contract Condition Monitoring is to monitor the change in a machine's condition and reduce the chances of any catastrophic failures and loss of production.

With the ongoing reduction of maintenance staff and budgets and the necessity to maintain production levels at their maximum, product and maintenance engineers are under constant pressure to reduce downtime.

In many companies, expensive condition monitoring and correction equipment has been purchased together with ongoing expensive training. After a period of time the equipment is often left unused due to reductions in maintenance staff or changes in job roll requiring to be undertaken again at a later date.

Dowding & Mills can provide a superior service without the need for in-house training, capital outlay or the upgrading and calibration of equipment.

Dowding & Mills has purchased the most up to date Condition Monitoring and corrective equipment available, ensuring the service to customers, is second to none.

15 branches throughout the United Kingdom enable customer's requests to be reacted to quickly for all the following services:

  • Thermal Imaging
  • Laser Shaft Alignment
  • On-site Balancing

Vibration analysis (Detection tool)

Vibration is an excellent non-intrusive tool for the detection of mechanical and electrical problems including Imbalance, Misalignment, Mechanical Looseness, Gear Defects, Resonance, Bent Shafts, Soft Foot, Eccentricity, Bearing defects within mechanical. Electrical problems include Phasing, Broken or loose rotor bars, Inverter drives, Loose coils, Eccentric air gaps, Shorts in windings, Improper brush contact, Thermal expansion.

These problems can be identified using portable data collectors and the latest software enabling professional reports to be produced with meaningful recommendations and solutions leading to full and speedy rectification.

Thermography (Detection tool)

Thermal imaging is a none intrusive tool used to detect temperature values, which can be analysed to identify potentially expensive faults before failure occurs in both electrical and mechanical equipment.

Dowding and Mills use 11 top of the range Thermal imaging cameras and the latest software to provide a first class service throughout the United Kingdom.

 TRANSFORMER OIL MAINTENANCE

To ensure that transformer oil deterioration does not lead to the damage of winding insulation, it is necessary to test the condition monitor the oil on a regular basis.

A Dowding & Mills engineer will visit to take samples of oil for analysis. This can usually be done without any interruption of the supply. The samples are then fully laboratory tested to British Standard BS 5730: 1979.

The tests entail checking electrical strength, acidity, water content, colour, fibre content, sediment content and general condition.

A full report is issued giving recommendations of any remedial action required.

If the oil is contaminated, it is often better to filter the old oil than renew, as the new oil may become contaminated immediately from moisture and sediment remaining after the tank has been drained. Using portable equipment and mobile generators even the remotest transformers can be reached.
